Jesus quoted the first line of Psalm 22 on the cross. It was a prayer of anguish as he took upon himself the wrath of the Father for the sins of his people. But it was also Jesus’s way of pointing his disciples to the rest of Psalm 22. And it’s amazing! Let’s discuss why it’s amazing together in this episode. Mark 15:24–34 ESV 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. 33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Psalm 22 ESV A Psalm of David. 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; 15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— 17 I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. 22 You who fear the LORD, praise him! Praying David’s Spirit-foreshadowing Promises of Christ | Prayer on Psalm 20

Jesus saw the Psalms as written by their human author, but also by the Holy Spirit (see Matt 22:41-46 below). Although King David lived over a thousand years before Christ, he is one of the Bible’s primary foreshadowing figures of Jesus as Christ. That’s why the Messiah was often referred to as “the son of David” (Matt 1:1, 9:27, 22:42). So sometimes the Spirit would speak foreshadowing prophetic lines in the psalms of David, in particular, that give us a poetically insightful promise of salvation in Jesus as the Christ. When we learn to read certain psalms of David with this lens, it opens up a greater experience of meditation and prayer for us. Let’s do that in this episode on Psalm 20. Matthew 22:41–46 NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Psalm 20 ESV To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! 5 May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions! 6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. 7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. 8 They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. 9 O LORD, save the king! Rejoicing In Our Resurrection | Prayer on Psalm 18

This is a rare Psalm where David no longer feels any threats to his life. God has completely delivered him from all his enemies, including his most dangerous enemy in King Saul. The poetic images David uses in this Psalm are so illustrative in ascribing to God what ALL of us will joyfully want to say the moment of our resurrection, when we ourselves will be completely delivered from all our threats. This is a great Psalm for meditation and prayer in living into the bigger story God has for you! Let me lead you in doing that right now with this episode. Psalm 18 ESV To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who addressed the words of this song to the LORD on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said: 1 I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 29 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 31 For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? 34 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. 35 The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation. 35 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever. Praying to Pray | Prayer on Psalm 17

Usually when we get past the wall of not wanting to pray, and just start praying aloud to God, it feels good to our soul. And we realize it wasn’t that hard after all. When we can take the “horizontal” concerns in our life that weigh us down and make them “vertical” by bringing them to God, we start to see them in light of God’s presence and love and future in and for our lives. And the burden of all our concerns is lifted, even if just a little. This is a great Psalm to just start praying to pray and take your life vertical, letting God take your burdens and replace them with himself. Let me lead you in doing that right now with this episode. Psalm 17 ESV A Prayer of David. 1 Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! 2 From your presence let my vindication come! Praying to Living Into Salvation’s Narrative | Prayer on Psalm 14

What narrative for your life are you living into most of the time? That’s the big question from Psalm 14. There’s the narrative of “the fool” who lives most of the time as if “there is no God.” Then there’s the narrative of those “who understand” and “seek after God.” All of us are somewhere in the middle of those two. But one big purpose of this podcast is to live into the reality of God’s presence in our lives and the “fortunes of his people” by meditation and prayer through this Psalm. Psalm 14 ESV To the choirmaster. Of David. 1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. 2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. 4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? 5 There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. 6 You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. 7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! How to Focus on Christ’s Return through Prayer | Prayer on Revelation 21

Our life won’t make any sense to us in any given moment if we don’t keep Jesus’s return as the focus of our life’s story. Revelation 21:1-7 is one of the best places in the entire Bible to do that. Especially when reading it in meditation and prayer. And for that reason it’s always been one of my favorite places to turn to re-focus my mind and heart in prayer. Let me lead you in a time of meditation and prayer through this powerful passage. Revelation 21:1–7 NIV 1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. Let God Light Up Your Eyes Through Honest Prayer | Prayer on Psalm 13

This is one of those Psalms of David where he starts off accusing God of ignoring him and forgetting about him. It says something about God that he would want to inspire David to write such an honest Psalm and put it in His Word as part of Scripture. God wants our honest prayers. And then David does what he always does; he focuses his mind and heart on the promises of who God really is for him. This little 6-verse Psalm has some powerful word imagery that is a great place for us to pray. Let me lead you in a time of prayer through this great little Psalm. Psalm 13 ESV 0 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? Praying Some Favorite Verses in Psalms

I’ve been praying through the Psalms for over 40 years now. So inevitably there have been some verses in the Psalms that I’ve personally found particularly powerful for prayer. I come back to them over and over, which means eventually I had them memorized and easily accessible to me anywhere in whatever circumstance. That’s how we know Jesus meditated on and prayed the Psalms over the years of his life -- by the way he so quickly quoted from them (more than from any other Old Testament book) and prayed them at key times in his life (the last words of Jesus on the cross were prayers from the Psalms, from 22:1 and 31:5). In this podcast episode, I read some of my favorite, go-to verses from the Psalms that I pray more often than any other passage of Scripture. They have been powerfully used by God in my own life and at key times in my life. Let me lead you in prayer through them as well in this episode. Psalm 16:1–2 ESV Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” Psalm 16:11 ESV You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 118:1 ESV Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 27:1 ESV The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:4 ESV One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:13–14 ESV I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Praying to Put On God’s Righteousness | Prayer on Psalm 11

In our last episode we looked at Psalm 38 and David’s frustration with himself for being his own worst enemy. It’s a psalm where David confesses his overwhelming sin and how that’s made his life stink and fester. I’m thankful the Holy Spirit has inspired such prayers for us in our own sinfulness. We all know what it’s like to be our own worst enemy. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit has also given us inspired scriptures and prayer with which we can pursue his righteousness -- put on his righteousness as our own new clothing that’s fashioned in the image of Christ. Psalm 11 is one of those prayers, also of David. Let’s do that together in this podcast episode. Psalm 11 ESV To the choirmaster. Of David. 1 In the LORD I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain, 2 for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; 3 if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” 4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’S throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man. 5 The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. 6 Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. 7 For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face. Matthew 5:5–10 ESV 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Galatians 5:22–23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Colossians 3:3–10 NIV 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Praying When Your Foolish Sin Stinks Up Your Life | Prayer on Psalm 38

Psalm 38 is a great example of the power of poetry to make us feel. We can feel David’s own misery and frustration with himself in this psalm. He realizes how much his own stupid and foolish sins have stunk up his life and his relationships, and he needs God’s help. Powerful word pictures in this psalm convey to us his anguish. It’s amazing how poetic words like this can actually transfer the emotions of someone living 3,000 years ago into our own emotions today! By inspiriting David’s prayer, the Holy Spirit has given us a vocabulary with which we can honestly and completely come to him with our sins. Let’s do that together in this podcast episode. Psalm 38 ESV A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering. 1 O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! 2 For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. 5 My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, 6 I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. 7 For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart. 9 O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. 10 My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. 11 My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. 12 Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. 13 But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. 15 But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. 16 For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!” 17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. 18 I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. 19 But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. 20 Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. 21 Do not forsake me, O LORD!
