How to have a bigger concept of God | Prayer on Isaiah 40
19:17 | 07-28-2020
LIke Psalm 81, these verses in Isaiah 40 are God speaking to his people. We can get a bigger/truer picture/concept of God’s power, wisdom and care by lifting up our eyes and experience God speaking to us. Isaiah 40:12 NIV Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Isaiah 40:18 NIV With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him? Isaiah 40:21 NIV Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? Isaiah 40:25–28 NIV 25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:31 NIV but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. Follow Dave Cover on Twitter @davecover. Like this content? What Will Satisfy You? | Prayer on Psalm 81:8-16
22:43 | 07-23-2020
Our lives are always a miserable prison when God gives us over to follow our own stubborn hearts. But we can find true satisfaction by listening to his word and submitting to him. This Psalm is the voice of God to us through the prophet Asaph. Psalm 81:8–16 ESV 8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! 9 There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. 10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11 “But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. 12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. 13 Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! 14 I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. 16 But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” Follow Dave Cover on Twitter @davecover. Worship In the Very Presence of God | Prayer on Psalm 84
21:36 | 07-16-2020
How can we worship in the very presence of God? The ancient Temple in the Old Testament is a picture of how we worship Him in Spirit and truth when we enter his presence through Jesus. Psalm 84 ESV A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH. 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. 3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. 4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah 5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. 7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion. 10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. 12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you! Follow Dave Cover on Twitter @davecover. Like this content? Feasting on the Abundance of God | Prayer on Psalm 36
25:16 | 07-14-2020
We can see our sin for what it really is when we compare it to feasting on the abundance of God. Psalm 36 ESV 1 Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated. 3 The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good. 4 He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil. 5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. 7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. 10 Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart! 11 Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away. 12 There the evildoers lie fallen; they are thrust down, unable to rise. The Fountain of Living Water | Prayer on Jeremiah 2:11-13, 19
18:10 | 07-09-2020
What would you exchange for the glory of God? The strongest motivation not to sin is when we understand the stupidity of turning from God as our only true satisfaction. Jeremiah 2:11–13 ESV 11 But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Romans 1:22–23 NIV 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Psalm 16:4 NAS The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; Psalm 36:9 ESV For with you is the fountain of life; John 4:13–14 NIV 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Jeremiah 2:19 NIV Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me,” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. Follow Dave Cover on Twitter @davecover. The Power of Giving Thanks | Prayer on Psalm 92
20:21 | 07-07-2020
We bring God’s power into our lives and circumstances when we learn to give thanks. Psalm 92:1–5 ESV 1 It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 2 to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, 3 to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. 4 For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. 5 How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep! Psalm 92:8 ESV but you, O LORD, are on high forever. Romans 1:20–21 NIV 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Can We See God’s Presence? | Prayer on Psalm 91:1-2
20:59 | 07-02-2020
We can take refuge in God’s presence by seeing him with our imagination in prayer Psalm 91:1–2 ESV 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 4 his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Our Dependency on God’s Mercy | Prayer on Psalm 57
18:08 | 06-30-2020
We can take refuge in God’s mercy for us whenever we approach him in prayer Psalm 57:1–5, 10-11 ESV TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO DO NOT DESTROY. A MIKTAM OF DAVID, WHEN HE FLED FROM SAUL, IN THE CAVE. 1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. 3 He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness! 4 My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts— the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! 10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! Follow Dave Cover on Twitter @davecover. Like this content? Make sure to share it with others and leave us a rating, so others can find it too. Seeking God Through Our Imagination | Prayer on Psalm 63:1-4
21:57 | 06-25-2020
We can use our imaginations to seek and “see” God in prayer Psalm 63:1–4 ESV A PSALM OF DAVID, WHEN HE WAS IN THE WILDERNESS OF JUDAH. 1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
