This is one of those psalms that David wrote in the context of fear, insecurity, and anxiety. Yours may not be as intense as David’s when he wrote this, but there are some phrases in this psalm that are calming and life-giving in any level of anxiety. This episode will discuss why and lead you in a time of prayer so you can take a deep breath and trust God instead of worry. Praying the Lord’s Prayer | Part 2 on Matthew 6:9-13 Prayer

This is a kind of expanded version of the Lord's Prayer, where each line provides a meditative heading in order to guide your prayers. The goal is not just trying to get through this as if it’s a ritual. The purpose is meditation and prayer. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4) Jesus says… Matthew 6:6, 9-13 (ESV) 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ...9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” My Father in heaven You are my Father in Heaven, which defines who you are to me and who I am to you. You are my origin — You are my Creator — my Maker (Ps 139:13) — and I am created in your image of love, righteousness, and creativity. You are my Father in Heaven, which means I’m a child of Heaven (Phil 3:20). I exist because you created me and wanted me to exist (Ps 139:16; Rev 4:11) — you wanted “me” in your universe (Eph 1:4-5). I exist by you and for you and through you (John 1:3; Rom 11:36; Eph 2:10; Col 1:16). You are the Author of all life (Acts 3:15) — a bottomless fountain of living water (Jer 2:13), and there is no true good apart from you (Ps 16:2; Jam 1:17). You are intimately acquainted with every detail of my life (Ps 139:3; Matt 10:29-31; Lk 12:7) You are my Father who is present with me forever (Ps 23:4; Ps 118:6-7; Ps 139:7; Matt 6:6). You are “our Father” — You said, “It’s not good for the man to be alone” (Gen 2:18). I am created to live in the context of your redeemed community — so all followers of Christ are my brothers and sisters who are precious in your sight. Hallowed be your name Your name is the I AM (Exodus 3:13-15). You are the Eternal One. The Source of all existence. The Giver of all life. You are the I AM who is always 100% present with me without being any less present anywhere else in the entire universe. You are the I AM who is always in my present tense. Glorified by your name. Treasured above all else in my life be your name. Cherished more than anything or anyone else in my life be your name. Ultimate be your name in my soul, my heart, my loves and affections, my wants and desires, my mind and thoughts, and in my body. May your name be my greatest trust. I want to bear your name in holiness — I want my life to bring glory and honor to your name in my words, my relationships, my work, my… May your kingdom come Your kingdom is the true Shalom my heart longs for. I want to live for the coming your kingdom as my greatest hope and desire (Matt 13:44-45; Rom 5:2). May your kingdom come more and more in my mind and my heart and my life. I want to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness as my greatest possession (Matt 6:33). In your kingdom, the Forever God is my God forever (Rev 21:7). I am your temple right now on earth to faithfully represent your kingdom (2 Cor 6:16). May your will be done (on earth as it is in heaven) I exist by your will and for your will (Rev 4:11; Rom 11:36) True life, true joy, and true satisfaction are forever found only in your will, but every other will and everything else will be nothing in the end (Ps 16:11). Your will is the only will that is my good forever (1 Cor 2:7, 9). I trust in your will for my life. Not my will, but your will be done (as Jesus prayed in Lk 22:42). Give me this day my daily bread Provide for me everything I need for today — every grace and mercy, every wisdom and skill, the money I need, the work I need, the relationships I need, the healing I need, and the protection I need. Jesus intended to put words in our mouth by giving us the Lord's Prayer. Praying the Lord's Prayer — out loud or meditatively in our hearts — is a way that Jesus gives us to “tune” our hearts to be in harmony more and more with the God who created this entire universe. Because this prayer comes directly from Jesus (who is God), we know that these phrases are the kinds of prayers God wants us to pray and that he wants to answer. We know that Psalm 41 was a prayer that Jesus meditated on and prayed often enough to quote from memory, because he does so In John 13:18. This prayer of David will help you pray the words Jesus himself often prayed, and specifically quoted before his death and resurrection as a sign to you that God delights in YOU. This episode will help you meditate on that, and lead you in a prayer to make it more real to you in your life. Psalm 41:4–13 ESV A Psalm of David 4 As for me, I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!” 5 My enemies say of me in malice, “When will he die, and his name perish?” 6 And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad. 7 All who hate me whisper together about me; they imagine the worst for me. 8 They say, “A deadly thing is poured out on him; he will not rise again from where he lies.” 9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me. 10 But you, O LORD, be gracious to me, and raise me up, that I may repay them! 11 By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me. 12 But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. 13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Praying to the Real Risen Jesus | Prayer on Acts 20:17-32

In Acts 20, Paul is saying his final words to the elders at the church in Ephesus, where he had spent three years in real relationship and tearful ministry. These words have some of the most powerful descriptions of how Paul actually SEEING the glorified, risen Jesus so dramatically changed his life. I believe Paul’s experience with the risen Jesus was real, and he eventually was executed for refusing to stop testifying to it. There are several phrases in Paul’s words in Acts 20 that can be helpful ways to think of your own life, and can guide us in a time of prayer to the risen Jesus who Paul said shined brighter than the Sun (Acts 26:12-18). Let this episode focus your own perspective of your life and help you pray to the REAL risen Jesus. Acts 20:17–21 NIV 17 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. 18 When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia. 19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents. 20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. 21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. Acts 20:24 NIV I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. Praying to Submit to God and Resist the Devil | Prayer on James 4:6-7

This is a prayer I’ve prayed from time to time for many years. It’s originally adapted from a “Warfare Prayer” I found in various books on spiritual warfare. I have found it to be a helpful and practical way to “submit to God and resist the devil,” as James says. Flag this episode as a prayer you can come back to from time to time yourself as you feel it’s needed. 1 Peter 5:6–9 NIV 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith… James 4:6–8 ESV 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. A Prayer to Submit to God and Resist the Devil Heavenly Father, I bow before you in worship. I want to submit and surrender myself completely and unreservedly in every area of my life to you,Almighty God. Your will for me is always my best. Lord Jesus, I worship you and I want to love and cherish you and treasure you above all else. I recognize that you alone are worthy to receive all glory, honor, and praise. I am thankful that you came as my righteous representative, and that through your work of atonement on the cross you have completely forgiven me of all my sin and broken through the other side of death to life on my behalf! You have given me eternal life in your Name. You have given me your perfect righteousness with which I am now able to draw near to the throne of God with confidence. And I will receive an eternal inheritance as a co-heir with you of your glory in your eternal kingdom with a resurrection like your resurrection. I am thankful that the blessings and honor the Lord Jesus Christ won on the cross and by His resurrection have been completely given to me, and that I am seated with the Lord Jesus Christ in the heavenly realm. I do, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, hold fast to my place in Christ and with Christ in the heavenly realm, with all powers of darkness and all spirit forces of wickedness under my feet. I affirm that the Word of God is true, and I choose to live today in the light of God’s Holy Word. I choose, Heavenly Father, to believe all your promises to me in Jesus Christ. I want to live in obedience to you and in fellowship with you. By faith and in total dependence upon your Holy Spirit, I put off the old self and put on Christ’s crucifixion — where the Lord Jesus Christ completely cleansed me and washed me and sanctified me from all my sin. And I put on the new self in Christ and stand in all the blessings of the resurrection, where the Lord Jesus Christ provided for mecomplete freedom and power to resist all sin and temptation in my life. Therefore, today I put off the old self with its pride, self-will, self-centeredness and idolatry, and I put on the new self with its humility, Christ-centeredness, and surrender to the will of God. I put off the old self with its selfishness, and I put on the new self with its love, servanthood, and selflessness in Christ Jesus. I put off the old self with its fear, insecurity, and unbelief, and I put on the new self with its courage, boldness, security, and trust in all the promises of God for me in Christ Jesus. I put off the old self with all its deceitful and destructive lusts and sexual impurity, and I put on the new self with all its righteousness, holiness, purity, and self-control in Christ Jesus. I put off today the old self in all things, and put on my new self in the Lord Jesus Christ as my power and freedom to reject and resist all the sins of the old self, and I choose to reject and resist them now inthe name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul recounts his experience with the glorified risen Jesus. It was life changing for him. He never forgot Jesus’s powerfully imaginative words. That’s what makes this one of those passages in the Bible that is great for meditation and prayer. Praying to Catch Your Breath | Prayer on Acts 3:1-21

The story of a miraculous healing of a paralyzed man by the apostles Peter and John in Acts 3 shows all the signs of someone’s memories. Unnecessary details in the narrative, like the time of day, the specific name of the gate where it happened, and the larger location by the large columns in the courtyard, are all signs that this narrative is actually told by someone’s memory (Peter and John). And this healing also gives us a powerful image of what our true condition is and the kind of “restoration of all things” Christ will bring when he brings Heaven back to earth. There are illustrative words and phrases in this narrative as powerful images for prayer as you come before the Author of Life. Come there with me in this episode. Acts 3:1–21 ESV 1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. 17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. Sometimes the reality of who God is comforts us. Sometimes it sobers us. Both are absolutely essential for a life lived with God. We need to be reminded who God really is. Psalm 50 is one of those psalms. It appeals to our imagination in order to wake us to the reality of both the beauty and the burn of God’s shining presence over all his creation.. But first we read from the New Testament: 1 Peter 5:6-11 NIV 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever.
