This is one of those Psalms of David where he starts off accusing God of ignoring him and forgetting about him. It says something about God that he would want to inspire David to write such an honest Psalm and put it in His Word as part of Scripture. God wants our honest prayers. And then David does what he always does; he focuses his mind and heart on the promises of who God really is for him. This little 6-verse Psalm has some powerful word imagery that is a great place for us to pray. Let me lead you in a time of prayer through this great little Psalm. Psalm 13 ESV 0 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? Praying Some Favorite Verses in Psalms

I’ve been praying through the Psalms for over 40 years now. So inevitably there have been some verses in the Psalms that I’ve personally found particularly powerful for prayer. I come back to them over and over, which means eventually I had them memorized and easily accessible to me anywhere in whatever circumstance. That’s how we know Jesus meditated on and prayed the Psalms over the years of his life -- by the way he so quickly quoted from them (more than from any other Old Testament book) and prayed them at key times in his life (the last words of Jesus on the cross were prayers from the Psalms, from 22:1 and 31:5). In this podcast episode, I read some of my favorite, go-to verses from the Psalms that I pray more often than any other passage of Scripture. They have been powerfully used by God in my own life and at key times in my life. Let me lead you in prayer through them as well in this episode. Psalm 16:1–2 ESV Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” Psalm 16:11 ESV You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 118:1 ESV Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 27:1 ESV The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:4 ESV One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:13–14 ESV I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Praying to Put On God’s Righteousness | Prayer on Psalm 11

In our last episode we looked at Psalm 38 and David’s frustration with himself for being his own worst enemy. It’s a psalm where David confesses his overwhelming sin and how that’s made his life stink and fester. I’m thankful the Holy Spirit has inspired such prayers for us in our own sinfulness. We all know what it’s like to be our own worst enemy. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit has also given us inspired scriptures and prayer with which we can pursue his righteousness -- put on his righteousness as our own new clothing that’s fashioned in the image of Christ. Psalm 11 is one of those prayers, also of David. Let’s do that together in this podcast episode. Psalm 11 ESV To the choirmaster. Of David. 1 In the LORD I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain, 2 for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; 3 if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” 4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’S throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man. 5 The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. 6 Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. 7 For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face. Matthew 5:5–10 ESV 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Galatians 5:22–23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Colossians 3:3–10 NIV 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:12–15 NIV 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Praying When Your Foolish Sin Stinks Up Your Life | Prayer on Psalm 38

Psalm 38 is a great example of the power of poetry to make us feel. We can feel David’s own misery and frustration with himself in this psalm. He realizes how much his own stupid and foolish sins have stunk up his life and his relationships, and he needs God’s help. Powerful word pictures in this psalm convey to us his anguish. It’s amazing how poetic words like this can actually transfer the emotions of someone living 3,000 years ago into our own emotions today! By inspiriting David’s prayer, the Holy Spirit has given us a vocabulary with which we can honestly and completely come to him with our sins. Let’s do that together in this podcast episode. Praying the Bigger Life for You in Christ | Prayer on Colossians 1:12-20

In Colossians 1:12-20, Paul is finishing a prayer he has for the Colossian believers, and then he quotes what many scholars believe was an early Christian hymn. As such, these are some of the most powerful truths in the Bible. And the more we understand them, the more we will want to live into God’s bigger story of life and light and love and glory that Jesus came to give us. In this episode we will look at what that bigger story is and why it is so powerful to motivate us to follow Jesus as our Christ/King, and we’ll take a few minutes to pray through these life-giving verses in Scripture. Colossians 1:12–20 NIV ...[Give] joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things... 1. The pre-incarnate Jesus was the God who created the entire universe. “The Son is the image of the invisible God” (v. 15). “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (v. 19). Colossians 2:9 NIV “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” “all things have been created through him and for him. He is before (in time; Jn 8:58) all things, and in him all things hold together” (v. 16-17). John 1:1–4 NIV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. Hebrews 1:2–3 NIV …In these last days [God] has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 2. The incarnate Jesus was fully God who also became fully human, so he could rightfully and legally and fully take back Genesis 1:26-28. God is invisible, but Jesus, who became the saving King, perfectly reveals and embodies YHWH. And also true, God-intended humanity. He is “the firstborn over all creation” (v. 15), which means “the firstborn from among the dead” (v. 18). Christ was the first to rise from the dead with a resurrection body. Elsewhere Paul calls him the “firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1Co 15:20). Others who were raised from the dead (2Ki 4:35; Lk 7:15; Jn 11:44; Ac 9:36-41; 20:7-12) were raised only to die again. 3. We can’t see the reality behind the scenes of all that Christ has done and is doing. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things” (v. 19-20). Seven times in vv. 15-20 Paul mentions “all creation,” “all things” and “everything.” When Adam and Eve sinned, not only was the harmony between God and human beings destroyed, but also disorder came into creation (Ro 8:19-22). Praying to Give Thanks | Prayer on Psalm 9

Psalm 9 has been a go-to psalm for me over the years because it reminds me of what I usually forget, and that’s to give thanks to Yahweh (Hebrew: “HE IS”). Giving thanks is when we recognize and give voice to our appreciation to God. Giving thanks to God is an act that wakes us a little bit more from the spell of self-sufficiency and autonomy, and reminds us of the real world we live in as created and controlled by God forever. Something important happens in our heart and soul when we express thanks to God. Let me help you do that in this episode on Psalm 9. Praying the Bigger Story Your Life is In | Prayer on Psalm 8

Psalm 8 is an amazing psalm in capturing the larger story of the Gospel. The God that created this incomprehensibly vast universe is also incomprehensibly mindful of you. When David looked up at the stars he saw the glory of God in his majesty and power, but also the glory of God in his love for him. This is a great psalm to spend time meditating through the bigger story and bigger glory God created you for and has re-placed your life in through Jesus. Psalm 8 NIV 1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. 2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Praying the “Beatitudes” | Prayer on Matthew 5:3-12

When Jesus started to announce the “Good News” of his coming Kingdom, the first word out of his mouth was “Blessed.” The particular word he used was loaded with complexity and meaning that it cannot be captured by that one English word “blessed.” It meant a deep security and happiness and joy and well-being and flourishing. And then he tells us what such a person lives like, and what his coming kingdom will be like. My Father in Heaven | Prayer on Matthew 6:9

Sometimes when I pray I just focus on the first line in The Lord’s Prayer -- “My Father in Heaven.” The order of The Lord’s Prayer is part of Jesus’s main point about prayer -- we need to focus first on who God is to us. And Jesus taught much about the God of this universe wanting us to come to him as our Father. And because Jesus rose from the dead, we can trust what he says is true. So sometimes I’ll just focus on that first line, Our Father in Heaven, as my prayer. Let me show you what I mean in this episode. Matthew 6:6-13 NIV But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 7:11 NIV If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 6:25-27 NIV Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:32-33 NIV For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
