Feeling More Secure In Your Relationship with God | Psalm 105
28:44 | 07-08-2021
What makes your relationship with God secure? What’s your security based on? Your level of faith? Your level of obedience? Or is it something more sure than either of those? Psalm 105 gives us the answer, and the language and phrases in this Psalm will help you feel more sure and secure in your relationship with God. This is a long Psalm, so we’ll just look at the first eleven verses. Psalm 105:1–11 ESV 1 Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 2 Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! 4 Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! 5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 6 O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 8 He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9 the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, 10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.” Follow Dave Cover on Twitter https://twitter.com/davecover (@davecover) Follow A Bigger Life on Twitter https://twitter.com/abiggerlifepod (@ABiggerLifePod) This podcast is a ministry of https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/ (The Crossing), a church in Columbia, Missouri, a college town where the flagship campus of the University of Missouri is located. Meditating on God in Creation | Psalm 104
31:01 | 07-06-2021
Nothing will lift up your soul more than God-exalting worship. You were created to derive your glory and identity from God’s glory and identity. And whenever you disassociate your existence from the worship of God, you are disconnected in some way even from your own soul. That’s why to worship God, to lift your eyes to him, to incline your heart to him, sometimes you first have to speak to yourself and tell yourself to worship God. To praise God. There’s a real you that needs to guide your brain and body into the real narrative of God’s glory and presence through worship. So one thing important that we do in worship is speak to our own soul. That’s what David does in Psalm 103. And that’s the first and last thing we see again in Psalm 104. But in this Psalm the emphasis is on meditating on the I AM by noticing creation. Jesus does exactly this in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206%3A26&version=NIV (Matthew 6:26) when he tells us to “look at the birds of the air”, and again in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206%3A28-34&version=NIV (Matthew 6:28), “see how the flowers of the field grow.” Like Psalm 104, Jesus meditated on God by seeing how creation reflects his wisdom, glory and care. We’ve all been indoctrinated by the permeating narrative of naturalism. Creation dissociated from God. Psalm 104 reminds us to remind ourselves what Jesus knew: all creation reflects God’s wisdom, glory, and care. Psalm 104 ESV 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2 covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. 3 He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; 4 he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. 5 He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. 8 The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. 9 You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. 10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; 11 they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches. 13 From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. 14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth 15 and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart. 16 The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. 17 In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. 18 The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers. 19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. 20 You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about. 21 The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. 22 When the sun rises, they steal away and lie down in their dens. 23 Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening. 24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. 26 There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. 27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due...

Why You Need to Speak to Yourself in Worship | Psalm 103

There’s a real you that needs to guide your brain and body into the real narrative of God’s glory and presence through worship. So one thing important that we do in worship is speak to our own soul. That’s what David does in Psalm 103. Psalm 103 ESV OF DAVID. 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. 13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. 17 But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, 18 to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. 19 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! 21 Bless the LORD, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! 22 Bless the LORD, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul! Sometimes You Just Need to Complain | Psalm 102
25:57 | 06-29-2021
Sometimes your life is not exactly under blue skies. Things are miserable and you’re not doing well. That’s OK. In fact, God has given us Psalms in the Bible to express exactly that. Which is encouraging to think. God wants us to complain to him. That’s what Psalm 102 is. Because sometimes you just need to vent to God. We have to learn to take our negative emotions to God in worship rather than internalizing them only to show up in our bodies or in despairing views of ourself or as sudden outbursts directed at others. Don’t ignore your negative emotions. Take them vertical. Think them through. Articulate them. Let’s learn how in this episode. Listen at 1.5 speed for the best experience. Psalm 102 ESV A PRAYER OF ONE AFFLICTED, WHEN HE IS FAINT AND POURS OUT HIS COMPLAINT BEFORE THE LORD. 1 Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! 2 Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call! 3 For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. 4 My heart is struck down like grass and has withered; I forget to eat my bread. 5 Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh. 6 I am like a desert owl of the wilderness, like an owl of the waste places; 7 I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop. 8 All the day my enemies taunt me; those who deride me use my name for a curse. 9 For I eat ashes like bread and mingle tears with my drink, 10 because of your indignation and anger; for you have taken me up and thrown me down. 11 My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass. 12 But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. 13 You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come. 14 For your servants hold her stones dear and have pity on her dust. 15 Nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory. 16 For the LORD builds up Zion; he appears in his glory; 17 he regards the prayer of the destitute and does not despise their prayer. 18 Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: 19 that he looked down from his holy height; from heaven the LORD looked at the earth, 20 to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die, 21 that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD, and in Jerusalem his praise, 22 when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the LORD. 23 He has broken my strength in midcourse; he has shortened my days. 24 “O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days— you whose years endure throughout all generations!” 25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, 27 but you are the same, and your years have no end. 28 The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you. Revive Your Story By Looking Through A Better Window | Psalm 101
30:19 | 06-24-2021
Something is always narrating your life. And most of the time a false narrative is screaming at you to find a better life in its story. Your life is being narrated by the windows you’re looking through. And Psalm 101 is an important window to look through to refocus and revive your own story by pointing your soul to the true and better story. Take some time in this episode to look through a better window. Psalm 101 ESV A PSALM OF DAVID. 1 I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will make music. 2 I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; 3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. 4 A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil. 5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure. 6 I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. 7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes. 8 Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the LORD. The Uncomfortable Claim in God’s Name | Exodus 34:5-8
32:18 | 06-22-2021
We're missing something big about God when we miss God's name, when we don't understand the importance of God's name, when God's name doesn't come to our mind when we think about God. When Moses asked God to show him his glory, God basically said “No, it would kill you right now because you’re too sinful. But I’ll do the next best thing. I’ll proclaim to you my name.” Then God gives a description of his name in Exodus 34:5-8. And there is an uncomfortable claim in that description that we’ll talk about in this episode. This is the third and final of a three-episode look into what God says about his name in the book of Exodus. (Listen at 1.5 speed for a better experience.) Exodus 33:18–20 NIV 18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” 19 And the LORD said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” Exodus 34:5–8 NIV Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. There are two ways the word Lord appears in your English Old Testament: 1. “Lord” — Lord This an English translation of the Hebrew Title Adonai (Lord). Ruler. Master. Owner. King. 2. “Lord” — YHWH — Yahweh This an English translation of the Hebrew name for God — YHWH — which most biblical scholars pronounce YAHWEH. When Moses first meets God in the burning bush, Moses asks God his name, and God answers… Exodus 3:14–15 NIV God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.” Follow Dave Cover on Twitter https://twitter.com/davecover (@davecover) Follow A Bigger Life on Twitter https://twitter.com/abiggerlifepod (@ABiggerLifePod) This podcast is a ministry of https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/ (The Crossing), a church in Columbia, Missouri, a college town where the flagship campus of the University of Missouri is located. Experiencing God’s Glory In His Name| Exodus 33-34
23:48 | 06-17-2021
When Moses asked God to show him his glory, God basically said “No, it would kill you right now because you’re too sinful. But I’ll do the next best thing. I’ll proclaim to you my name.” This side of our coming resurrection, the closest thing we have to seeing God’s glory is to understand his name. When God wants to give his people a name that best captures who he is in a way we can most understand the infinite, he says I AM the I AM, HE IS is my name forever” (Exodus 3:14-15). Understanding God’s name will empower us to live in his glory more and more until the day we’re able to see it for ourselves with resurrection eyes. This is the second of a three-episode look into what God says about his name in the Old Testament book of Exodus. (Listen at 1.5 speed for a better experience.) Romans 8:18 NIV I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 1 John 3:2–3 NIV Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV And we all, who … contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Do You Pray Using God’s Name? | Exodus 3:14-15
24:15 | 06-15-2021
Who is God? What comes to your mind when you think of God? Author A. W. Tozer said it this way in his book, Knowledge of the Holy: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Let me state it differently, what comes into your mind when you think of God will determine everything else in your life. How you answer that question “Who is God?” will completely define you. But don’t go by your own intuition to answer that question. That’s part of the problem, not the solution. To know the real God, you need to shape your view of God by what God has revealed about himself. And the first thing God reveals about himself to the first author of Scripture was that God has a name. This is the first of a three-episode look into what God says about his name in the Old Testament book of Exodus. (Listen at 1.5 speed for a better experience.) There are two ways the word Lord appears in your English Old Testament: 1. “Lord” — Lord This an English translation of the Hebrew Title Adonai (Lord). Ruler. Master. Owner. (Yahweh) Psalms 68:4 NIV His name is the LORD. (Yahweh) C.S. Lewis (Beyond Personality) God has infinite attention, infinite leisure to spare for each one of us. He doesn't have to take us in the line. You're as much alone with Him as if you were the only thing He'd ever created. Psalm 8:1 ESV O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Psalm 9:10 ESV And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 33:21 ESV For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Psalm 75:1 ESV We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. Psalm 148:5 ESV Let them praise the name of the LORD! For he commanded and they were created. Why You Really Do Want to Embrace Thankfulness | Psalm 100
22:28 | 06-10-2021
A sobering reality in the Bible is the importance of having a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving rather than complaining. It's always surprised me how one of the “big” sins in the Bible is grumbling. Complaining. And one of the pillars of a biblical faith is having a heart of thanks toward God. Actively. Willfully. That's what Psalms of thanksgiving do for me. Like Psalm 100. They’re like those bumpers in the gutters for little kids to learn to bowl. They guide my prayers like a bowling ball to the pins. They help me put my heart where I want it to be with God. And they provide vocabulary for me that I can learn to use as I view my life vertically. Let’s do that now in this episode. Psalm 100 ESV A PSALM FOR GIVING THANKS. 1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! 2 Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! 3 Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Keeping Yourself Inside this Amazing Story | Psalm 98
21:30 | 06-08-2021
What always amazes me in the Psalms is how they consistently and poetically capture the bigger story this world is in. All throughout the Psalms, God is giving us a glimpse of the future, and it strengthens my faith to see how the Bible has always been giving us this bigger story of what God is doing. I want to be in that story. I don't want to get hijacked by all the other dead-end stories screaming at me — everybody else's cause — everybody else's new idea that's not new at all. I don't want to get sucked into these pseudo stories and miss the bigger story that has been foreshadowed in the Bible, Like here in Psalm 98. And what helps me stay in this story is to meditate on and pray through these important biblical passages. Let’s do that now in this episode. Psalm 98 ESV 1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! 5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD! 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together 9 before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
