Being Transformed By God’s Character | Psalm 112

24:56   | 09-16-2021

Psalm 112 is a kind of part 2 of Psalm 111. In our last couple of episodes we saw how the works of God’s (Yahweh’s) creation and redemption/salvation are forever because God’s glory and majesty and radiance and splendor righteousness and mercy and compassion are forever shining on his people. Now Psalm 112 is a meditation on how that shines into God’s people in such a way that they in turn shine that same glory and righteousness in their own life and the lives of others. It’s pretty cool how the Bible is so consistent with its one message, even seen in this psalm written 3,000 years ago. And this psalm emphasizes how God’s promise can free you from a life of anxiety and fear. Let’s talk about it in this episode. Psalm 111 ESV 1 Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them. 3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful. 5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. 6 He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations. 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy; 8 they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. 9 He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name! 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! Psalm 112 NIV 1 Praise the LORD. Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who find great delight in his commands. 2 Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. 4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. 5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. 6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. 7 They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. 9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor. 10 The wicked will see and be vexed, they will gnash their teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing. Ephesians 4:22–24 NIV You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Matthew 10:28–31 NIV 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Words That Breathe God’s Life Into Us | Psalm 111

22:18   | 09-14-2021

In our last episode we looked at Psalm 111. But when I worship using the Psalms, I very often will spend several days in the same Psalm. Many Psalms have so much to offer and I find more each day that I spend reading and meditating and worshiping God in it. Our last episode looked at some helpful truths in this Psalm that give us confidence and security in our standing with God. But there are so many repeated words and phrases in this Psalm that can https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Timothy%203%3A16&version=NIV (breathe God’s life into our souls )when we bring them alive using our imagination (or what Paul referred to as “https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%201%3A18&version=NIV (the eyes of our heart)”). So I want to go back again in this episode and emphasize some of those words for our worshiping imagination of all that God is for us in Christ. 1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Romans 11:36 NIV For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Who can you share this podcast with? Why You Can Have Comfort, Confidence and Security Now | Psalm 111

17:57   | 09-09-2021

When I turn to Psalm 111 in my Bible, every verse is underlined. That’s because this psalm has often given me comfort, confidence, and security in my relationship with God. And the reason is because it helps me trust in his forever promise to me rather than in myself or my faith. Let me tell you about it as we draw near to God together through this psalm. Why Is Psalm 110:4 So Amazing? | Psalm 110

30:58   | 09-07-2021

Why is Psalm 110 the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament, and yet perhaps one of the most unknown Psalms to Christians today? What have we missed? In our last episode we discussed v.1, a verse Jesus quotes and surprises everyone with an observation everyone missed for over a thousand years. In this episode, we talk about the amazing v. 4. Don’t miss it! Psalm 110:1–3 ESV A PSALM OF DAVID. 1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! 3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. 7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head. Luke 24:36–45 NIV 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. Matthew 22:41–46 NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Genesis 14:18–20 NIV Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Hebrews 6:16–7:3 NIV 16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. 1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of

Matthew 28:18–20 NIV 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 1 Corinthians 15:24–27 NIV 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.” Who can you share this podcast with? When People Accuse You Falsely | Psalm 109

17:54   | 08-31-2021

There will be times in your life when others are speaking bad about you. Sometimes it’s not that big of a deal and you can move on. But other times it can be super painful and even highly damaging to your reputation. As a follower of Jesus, how should you handle that? That’s the subject and prayer of this episode. Psalm 109 ESV A PSALM OF DAVID. 1 Be not silent, O God of my praise! 2 For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. 3 They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. 4 In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. 5 So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. 21 But you, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me! 28 Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad! 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death. Psalm 57:4 ESV My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts— the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Matthew 5:10–12 NIV 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Luke 6:22–23 NIV 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. Luke 6:26–28 NIV 26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. 27 But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. John 5:44 NIV How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 1 Peter 4:14–16 NIV 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 1 Peter 4:19 NIV So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. Acts 5:41 NIV The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Who can you share this podcast with? What About Psalms That Pray for Retribution? | Psalm 109

24:21   | 08-26-2021

You’re reading or praying through the Psalms and you come across one where David prays for terrible things to happen to his enemies. For God to bring disaster upon enemies. And you can’t help but think how unChristian this is! “I can’t pray for this!” you think to yourself, “Aren’t we supposed to https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%205%3A44&version=NIV (pray FOR our enemies) and https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2012%3A14&version=NIV (BLESS those who curse us)?” That’s the subject of this episode. 6 Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. 7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin! 8 May his days be few; may another take his office! 9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow! 10 May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! 11 May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil! 12 Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children! 13 May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation! 14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out! 15 Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth! 16 For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. 17 He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him! 18 He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones! 19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day! 20 May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my life! 21 But you, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me! 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is stricken within me. 23 I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. 24 My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt, with no fat. 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they wag their heads. 26 Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to your steadfast love! 27 Let them know that this is your hand; you, O LORD, have done it! 28 Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad! 29 May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak! 30 With my mouth I will give great thanks to the LORD; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death. 2 Timothy 4:14-18 (ESV) Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory

How You Can Choose Hope In Your Life | Psalm 108:1

25:04   | 08-24-2021

In https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2013%3A13&version=NIV (1 Corinthians 13:13), the apostle Paul tells us that a life filled with God’s Spirit will be more and more characterized by three things: faith, hope, and love. You can’t really live the Christian life without them. Those three are always intertwined, making it impossible to have one without also having the others. Hope is like a vital third leg of a three-legged stool. Like with faith and love, hope is a kind of mental and emotional switch we must hit inside our head. It’s a choice we can make. But not a blind choice. God has given us powerful ancient words and prayers upon which to base that choice. That’s the subject of this episode. Psalm 108:1 ESV My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! Psalm 27:14 ESV Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Psalm 31:24 NIV Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. 2 Corinthians 4:16–17 ESV So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. Psalm 42:11 NIV Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 62:5 NIV Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. Psalm 130:7 NIV11-GK ...Put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. Psalm 146:5–6 NIV Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. Who can you share this podcast with? What Are You Hoping For? | Psalm 108:1

24:44   | 08-19-2021

Your faith is not just a set of beliefs. Your faith always has an emotional element to it. An emotional view of God’s promises that affects you in some way. It’s an emotional response that the Bible refers to as “hope.” A hope that looks up and looks forward in all your horizontal circumstances. Understanding the Bible’s reasons for hope will enable your emotions to become more and more driven by hope rather than discouragement or discontentment. That’s the subject of this episode. Psalm 108:1 ESV My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! Psalm 27:14 ESV Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Psalm 31:24 ESV Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD! Romans 8:23–25 NIV 23 ...We ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Ephesians 1:18–19 NIV 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Hebrews 10:23 NIV Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 1 Peter 1:21 NIV Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. Titus 3:4–8 NIV 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. 1 Peter 1:3–6 NIV 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice. Getting a Heart of Courage | Psalm 108

29:24   | 08-17-2021

God has put your life in a place and time that requires courage to survive. That’s why all throughout the Bible God calls his people to have hearts of courage. Even though you can’t always see it, every minute of your life is taking place in the midst of real enemies. You may not think of life that way. So courage is not something you normally think of as one of your greatest needs. Psalm 108 is the Holy Spirit’s way of reminding you. That’s the subject of this episode. Psalm 108 ESV A SONG. A PSALM OF DAVID. 1 My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! 2 Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! 3 I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 4 For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! 6 That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer me! 7 God has promised in his holiness: “With exultation I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my scepter. 9 Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph.” 10 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? 11 Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies. 12 Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! 13 With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes. Remember the last Psalm… Psalm 107:26 ESV They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; Psalm 27:14 ESV Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
